Saggin’: Fashion or Faux Pas?

SagginOne of the fashion phenomena that continues to baffle me is the idea that walking around with the waist of your pants at your knees is somehow appealing. Seriously? That is to be considered fashionable? I fail to see the appeal in having to either widen my gait in an attempt to always have my legs far enough apart so as to not lose my trousers or having to physically hold my britches up with one hand as I walk down the street.

saggy-pants-illustration-vl-verticalResearchers have concluded that saggin’ originates from the prison system. Inmates were not allowed to have belts due to the possibility of them being used for suicide or violence. Thus, their pants sagged; and of all the people for the youth of our nation to model themselves after, inmates are obviously the most appropriate choice. In today’s society, children (and in some cases adults) look up to and impersonate people who have broken the law vice those who either embrace or enforce it. The fact that the Hip Hop culture has embraced saggin’ like it has, lends more credence to the claim that saggin’ is an acceptable practice.

I guess I just don’t understand the kids of today. There are many things that irritate me about the youth of the nation. From wardrobe to work ethic, attitudes to actions, our country is in trouble. The people walking around with the underwear displayed as a part of their outfit are the leaders of tomorrow. Those who cannot grasp the concept that the waist of your pants is supposed to be at your waist are the same people who are going to be making and enforcing the laws governing the safety and conduct of the future populace. Am I the only one who sees this as an issue? Do you not care about the future of our great nation? Perhaps it is a leap, sagging pants to the downfall of a nation, but it is a leap that is not out of the realm of possibility. Am I wrong?

A message to those who “sag”: Pull up your pants, you look like an idiot!

To the parents who let their children sport this style: Do you not realize that your child’s inability to properly wear their pants makes you look like a failure of a parent? Do you care?

  1. Hey man! I found this out by accident and now do it on a regular basis. Do you remember that old thing where you would step on the heel of your buddies sneakers and give them a flat tire? if you do that to people sporting a sag it pulls their pants down around there ankles and a simple “oh! My bad” lets you get away with it.

  2. This is a well written and funny article. But I think the people whose pants are saggin will either grow up and get over it, maybe .25% will make it as a hip hop star, and the rest will be stuck in minimum wage job. So don’t worry, they won’t be running the country with that frame of mind. Also, as an overachiever of that generation, remember when you generalize that not everyone is a lazy punk. Just like every baby boomer isn’t unable to handle credit or a mortgage etc etc.

  3. I understand that many individuals from past generations see things such as this as disrespectful, immoral, etc., but in all honesty, it truly is just a style of dress. Yes I’m sure some may do it to emulate inmates and gangsters in some way but the majority just do it because they like wearing their pants that way. Think of how you would feel if someone was constantly dogging on the way you dressed or styled your hair or whatever the case was. Don’t you think you would find it pretty offensive and honestly ridiculous that someone was worried about how you chose to dress? and the the thought that people who sag do not respect authority or are unintelligent completely offends me in every sense of the word. I sag and I have had many connections with authoritative figures and give them nothing but the utmost respect when they deserve it. I also received all commended scores on my TAKS standardized tests in high school, and am now in college. I am also positive that my mother and father are the farthest things from failures as parents, my dad is a CSM in the National Guard and has always taught me a tangible discipline and respect for my country that most don’t have. My point is, don’t be so quick to judge one based on his choices in aesthetic appearances. That kind of close-minded prejudice and discrimination is what hurts our country, not belt loops below the waistline.

    1. I’m 51 and have seen a few trends in my lifetime. Except for you, I have not heard an intelligent word come out of a saggers mouth.
Where this is an expression for you, but for the young men in the hood, it is a giving up on life. Just mindless, blindly being a follower of European influenced entrapment.

And as far as you giving police authority respect, how often do you come in contact with them and why would they even approach you in the first place. My only contact with them is when I see them drive by as I’m walking down the street.

  4. I am amazed at how guys who wear their pants low like this seem to feel that it’s just a fashion trend or they like it like that – don’t they realize that it looks stupid to women – especially from behind – and makes us want to just pull the pants down and run off? Cuz no one can catch you with their pants around their ankles! And surely they don’t think that this is “cool” in any way shape or form? WTF? I just don’t want to see not only your butt, but your underwear!!! It’s really stupid looking and makes you look like a toddler who can’t pull up their pants and their pull ups/diapers are showing… Yes, I said TODDLER. Sheesh… idiots. Get a belt or get whacked by one.

  5. Listen Trystan, while I agree with it may be a stretch to call you parents out, or to stay all people who do this are stupid (although most are), i do think you have to understand having your pants around your knees, a$$ all hanging out in your Hanes, or boxers, while you walk down the street holding them up is neither practical nor a good sense of style. Furthermore, nobody wants to see your underwear man. I dont want to see you buttcrack either. Have you ever heard leave it to the imagination, well you give us no choice but to see it. I dont want to. Its hard to look away when so many of you who do this don’t give me the opportunity. Its just ridiculous looking.

I use to skate, and we wore baggy pants, but we wore belts and we didn’t have to hold are pants up at the pocket and our backsides were not hanging out . Its just ridiculous and its gross. That’s all.

And whoever said girls think its cool: I hope you know that couldn’t be any further from the truth. Not a single woman, black, white, red, or yellow, who I have spoken to about said issue, has had one good thing to say about it. Not one.

  7. I have to disagree with a lot of what this argument states. To begin with, throughout history, both recent and past, youth have been known to be anti-authority, disrespectful and generally a pain in the ass. But to say all this is to speak a stereotype, because the vast majority of youth, both past and present, do show respect, humility and intelligence. For those that don’t, they will either learn to grow up in time, or, as was stated in a previous comment, will end up unemployed or in a low paying job.

Secondly, let me put this question back to you. Do you think the leaders of today, and their predecessors, were all perfect role models in their youth? Or is possible that they did some of the same type of things that you stereotypically associate with us?

Also, let me ask you to think back to yourself as an adolescent, and objectively think about what you might have done that your parents and their parents would have frowned upon, or what might have made them say “I guess I just don’t understand the kids of today”.

I agree with you entirely that young people that wear their pants around their thighs look stupid, but i’m sure you did similar things when you were a kid, and guarantee you that 99.7% of them will realise they look stupid in time.
