Follow the instructions that came with your new router!

Phone cord: thin (usually flat) wire with 4 pins in the connector

Cable: thick round cable with a metal connector and a single copper wire in the center of the connector

CAT-5: round cord thicker than phone cord, but not as thick as cable with 8 pins in the connector

Well, for those who bought an iPad 3G (regrettably, I did not), the wait is almost over. Friday it is.

AT&T has finally released its pricing plans:

$14.99 for 250MB (both monthly, duh!)

-or-

$29.99 for unlimited (I guess that 5GB max rumor we heard about didn’t happen after all)

The cool thing is that if you opt for the $14.99/mo plan, you will get notifications when you are about to reach your limit: one at 20% remaining, one at 10%, and one when you are out. It is my understanding that one will be able to either add more data a-la-carte or upgrade your package at that point.

Seriously, though…if you can’t afford that extra $15/mo for the unlimited plan, perhaps you should have rethought that $600-850 purchase in the first place.

Have an iPod touch or an iPhone you are getting rid of? Send me an email, I will send you my address! Yes, that was a joke, but I’ll take it if you send it! Regardless of where the device goes, you might want to erase it first. If you don’t, whomever you give it to will have all of your data and network info. Not good. The process is simple, but time consuming. Time consuming in the “waiting” capacity. It only takes about 20 seconds to get the process started. Here is how to get it done.

Select “settings” from the home screen.

Tap the “General” button.

Scroll to the bottom and tap the “Reset” button.

Tap the “Erase All Content and Settings” button.

Confirm your selection.
NOTE: This will erase EVERYTHING from your iPod/iPhone. It can take up to 4 hours to complete. Ensure you have it plugged into a power source. If the battery fails during the process, it could put the device in permanent paperweight mode!
Irritating, isn’t it? I feel your pain. I argued with this for weeks before I finally found the solution. With a few simple steps, and about 5 minutes of your life, you can put this problem to rest!

First, and probably most important, you need to ensure that your wireless network is secure. If it is not, or if you don’t know what that means, read this post for a quick explanation of WEP and WPA and how to set up a basic network, then this post for more on security. After you have secured network, you are ready to correct the iPod problem.

Reset your iPod touch.

Once it starts back up, tap the “Settings” icon.

Select “General” from the menu.

Have an iPod touch and a wireless network? Time to put them together. If you don’t have internet on your touch, you are definitely missing out. We will cover all the steps. Here we go!

What you will need:

Your iPod touch.

A wireless network. If you don’t know how to set it up, read this post for a quick explanation of WEP and WPA and how to set up a basic network, then this post for more on security.

Your SSID (if it is not broadcasted).

Your passphrase.

Let’s get it connected:

Tap the “Settings” icon on the home screen.

Tap the “Wi-Fi” button.

Ensure the switch for Wi-Fi is on. If your SSID shows without a lock to the right, it is unsecured. This is bad. You definitely need to read the posts listed in step 2 above. If you just want to leave your network open to any hacker who wants to access it, just tap on your network name and you should be done. Not the best choice, but it is not my network. If your network shows, but with a lock next to it, select it then skip to step 5.

If you are not broadcasting your SSID, and you shouldn’t be, you will not see it here. Select “Other” and enter your SSID in the “Name” field.

Tap the “Security” button and select your encryption method. Tap “Other Network” in the upper left to return to the “Other Network” page.

You will notice that the “Password” field has appeared. Enter your passphrase in the blank.

Tap “Join” in the lower right corner once your passphrase has been entered correctly.

You should now see your network in the list. It should be a different color than the others and there should be a checkmark to the left of the name. You are now connected.

Did this post help you? Do you have any other suggestions for the readers? Did I get something wrong? Tell me! I would enjoy your feedback. Hope you had fun.

iPod touch giving you random problems? Have you noticed a lag developing in its performance? You probably need to reset it. You next question is probably something along the lines of, “Will I lose everything when I do it?” That was my first question, anyway. The answer is no. This is a basic step equivalent to restarting your computer. A reset should always be your first troubleshooting step for your iPod Touch.

Most people think that simply holding the Sleep/Wake button on the top of their touch until the power off slider appears, then sliding it to shut it down is the same as a reset. It is not. This only puts your iPod Touch into sleep mode. It is a low power consumption state only. All of your settings and background apps are restored upon wake-up. After a while, installing and removing apps; starting and closing apps; and adjusting and readjusting settings will take a toll on your iPod Touch’s memory and performance. Resetting it will alleviate these problems.

To reset your iPod Touch, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons simultaneously until the display goes black and the Apple logo reappears. Once you see the Apple logo, you can release both buttons. It will take a few seconds to a minute for your iPod touch to completely start.

That is it! You have successfully restarted your iPod touch. It is generally a good idea to reset your iPod touch once a week, depending on the level of use. Enjoy!

Personally, I like to reconfigure my home network every now and then to make sure no one who may or may not have gained access to my system without my knowledge does not enjoy free internet for as long as they live near me. There will be times that you will need to restore your router to factory settings…say, if you have forgotten your admin password, for instance. Hey, it happens to the best of us. Luckily, you do not have to buy a new router. Just perform a 30/30/30 reset. Pay attention…this is super complicated!

Locate the reset button on your router

Locate the power cord on your router

Press in the reset button (sometimes you have to use an ink pen for some routers) and hold it for 30 seconds

Without releasing the reset button, disconnect the power cord

Continue to hold the reset button in for 30 seconds

Without releasing the reset button, plug the power back in

Continue to hold the reset button in for 30 seconds

Release the reset button

Wait 30 Seconds

Power cycle your router

That’s it. You are now back to factory settings on your router. Enjoy!

There will come a time when your wireless devices will not connect to your router, even though the Wi-Fi light is blinking. There will be a time when your router will not connect to your modem. There is an easy process that will solve 75% of all “no internet connection” problems that exist today. It is called the power cycle. There are three steps, pretty simple.

Unplug your device

Wait 20-30 seconds

Plug your device back in

Now, I realize this is a rather simple process, but you would be amazed at the people who do not take the time to do this one little troubleshooting step. If you are ever lose internet connectivity, your best bet is power cycle both your router and your modem, but it must be done in the following order:

Unplug your router

Power cycle your modem

Plug your router back in

You will be surfing the web again in no time.
