Foursquare Badges

The Bottom Line

All of my foursquare Badge information has moved to my new site: foursquareguru.com. Please update your links. Thank you for being a loyal reader. You have to be to even have landed here in the first place.

Why did it move?

Several reasons. Mainly because of my hosting provider. I am sure you have noticed this site down more often than it is up here recently. I can complain about it all day long, but the fact remains that my list needed an overhaul anyway.

Yeah, I had noticed it was out of date.

Well, thanks for noticing! Ha ha! My new site is laid out better, and has been completely recoded for efficiency and fluidity. It looks somewhat similar, but is completely redone. Users can add a badge to the list any time they find a badge that is not listed. Now you no longer have to wait for me to add it on my own…you can help! With everyone helping, we will make it awesome!

Thanks for updating this, I am aggravated that wikipedia dropped this section on their foursquare article. Freakin’ deletionists should find a new hobby. Also I have a few badges you asked for more info on:

Babysitter: http://foursquare.com/user/ejly/badges/959089 for 10 checkins at a venue tagged ‘playground’

There are ‘Bravo’ and ‘Zagat’ badges too – here’s some examples: http://foursquare.com/user/jitle/badges/1093621 and http://foursquare.com/user/byronbrewer/badges/680097

And there were badges for Vancouver for the Olympics: http://foursquare.com/user/iamkhayyam/badges/811134

And out of curiosity about whether the far far away badge applied to Indianapolis, I did some searching and found some Austin checkins getting the Far Far Away badge: here’s one – http://foursquare.com/user/t/badges/1134

Also I have been at a venue with 3 members of the other gender and not gotten the Player Please badge. So there may be some secret sauce required in addition to just being with 3 other folks of the other gender (even considering that all of us had profiles specifying our genders).

Another item of note – logically, getting the swarm scenario (50 people) would also invoke the entourage (10 people) and Player Please badges (minimum 4 people). Yet it doesn’t seem to do so. For example, here’s someone with the swarm badge but no entourage or player please badge: http://foursquare.com/user/wloglobal/badges/983895

    PS I hate the CAPTCHA.

cool list – interesting that you’re providing tips as to how to earn each badge… I too was pretty chaffed at the deletion of the wikipedia page – I put a lot of work in on that. I was able to recover most of it and recreate it, and have kept the list up to date with all known badges, in the order they were released.

Wanted to share some things I have found:
BFF: was definitely never activated, this directly from co–founder @dens
player please: was deactivated after foursquare realized that the logic for swarm had overridden ‘player’
far far away (austin): only active during sxsw 09
entourage: only active during sxsw 09
ziggy: is not NY specific, it’s for 3x venues tagged ‘food truck’

    • thekruser
#5 written by thekruser 3 years ago

      Tony-

Thanks for the comment and the information. I figured it would be helpful to have a reference point for people to use to understand what they need to do to get a badge.

Unfortunately, I fear it will lead to cheating in some extent — especially as applied to those badges earned by the tags assigned to a venue. I worry that some losers will start tagging the gym with ‘food truck’ and so on.

I didn’t know that you were the driving force behind the Wikipedia page. It was a fantastic list. Thank you for the work you did on it. It is crap that they deleted it.

Again, thanks for the info. I have made the corrections above. Hope to hear from you again in the future!

@TonyFelice – that wiki article was well done. There are so many software wiki pages with such detail; I don’t know why your foursquare article got singled out.

@Tkruser I like your example of the gym tagged ‘food truck’ and I see your point of how giving out the info leads to gaming. Where I’m at, most venues weren’t tagged when I started playing and recruited some friends to the game; I found it fun to tag places and have the badge show up for them. (E.g. I tagged the karaoke bar as such, which invoked the badge for a friend.) Also once I knew what tags were valid I tagged some corresponding places so that in my travels I could earn badges; without that incentive, I doubt I’d have done the data entry. So, I think there’s an upside to revealing the logic that drives the badges; how could one manage the downside too?

Maybe an anti-badge should be issued for superusers who get caught tagging venues incorrectly too often. Foursquare could remove badges earned unfairly, and badge the offending tagger with a negative badge. Just don’t make me code that.

    • thekruser
#8 written by thekruser 3 years ago

An anti-badge…what a great idea. Possibly include a big red banner at the top of their profile page that says “cheater” or something of the like!

Like you, I was the first in my area to start playing. I have noticed recently that venues are appearing on the check in list that I did not add, so I am lead to believe there are others now. I have found it difficult to “recruit” people though, as I work in a non-tech field and it is like pulling teeth for my associates/friends to grasp the concept of tech games. Or perhaps it is that we are “nerds”.

  • Nathan
#9 written by Nathan 3 years ago

Wow, awesome post and great comments. I’m fairly new to Foursquare and since I live in a small town I spend most of my time doing the data entry since most venues don’t exist and if they do, they’re not tagged at all. Thanks for putting all of this together, I’ll definitely be bookmarking it for future reference!

Here’s some notes on badges not working:

i have been to 3 different gyms over 15x in 30 days and I have not gotten the Gym Rat badge.

I was in 7 different airports in 2 months and didn’t get the Jet Setter Badge after 5 airport checkins. I got it after my 7th.

    • warrenLOL
#19 written by warrenLOL 3 years ago

You should add “gym” tag to the venue where you check-in. And same to the air ports, add “airpot” to each airport you check-in.

      Jenny-

WarrenLOL is right. The venues were most likely not tagged appropriately. Try adding the tags and y should be set. Thanks for the comment. Hope to hear from you again.

Actually you don’t have to use the bing map to get the world cup badge. What you have to do is to cheer for you favorite team by shouting “Go….” when they are playing. Do this twice of the same team (two matches) and you’ll get the badge. It has nothing to do with the venues u check in….

Sorry if someone already mentioned this.
